Meet the Artist
Hi, I’m Veeresh DM — an artist, teacher, and nature lover. I was born in Davanagere, Karnataka, and now live in Mysuru with my wife Shylaja, who is also an artist. Art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and over the years, it’s become my way of expressing not just creativity but also my deep connection with nature and spirituality.
My artistic journey began at the University College of Visual Arts in Davanagere, where I built my foundation in fine arts. I later trained at Uma School of Painting to refine my techniques and went on to complete a Master Diploma in Painting from Government Dharwad. My time at Srikalaniketana School of Art in Mysuru helped me explore diverse themes and discover my unique artistic voice.
My professional career started at Magnitude Advertising Company in Bengaluru, where I learned the art of commercial design and creative visuals. But my heart always belonged to fine art, which is why I eventually moved to teaching. Now, I work as an art teacher at Kademanuganahalli Government High School near Nagarhole Forest — and honestly, the natural beauty of this region has had a huge influence on my art.
You’ll notice that sparrows are a constant feature in my paintings. That’s not by accident. The school where I teach is filled with sparrows, and watching them inspired me to use them as a symbol of balance and conservation in my work. Through my art, I try to reflect the delicate relationship between humans and nature.
My paintings often explore themes of meditation, yoga, and spirituality — with depictions of Lord Shiva, Krishna, and Buddha in serene postures, surrounded by the beauty of forests, waterfalls, and wildlife. My goal is to not just create visually appealing art, but to inspire people to connect with nature and reflect on the need for balance in our world.
I’ve had the privilege of showcasing my work at galleries like Dharwad Government Art Gallery, Bangalore Chitrakala Parishath, Mysuru Suchitra Art Gallery, and Srikalaniketana Gallery. One of my proudest moments was hosting my exhibition ‘Prakriti Purusha’ at Srikalaniketana Art Gallery, where each piece highlighted the relationship between humans and nature — with sparrows at the heart of every work.
Art has also allowed me to contribute to the environment in a small but meaningful way. I’ve installed over 30 sparrow nest boxes to raise awareness about bird conservation. Through my role as a teacher, I encourage students to appreciate nature and understand its importance — because I truly believe that “Nature is the greatest teacher.”
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to receive recognition for my work, including the Dussehra Kalamela Award and praise for my portraits of iconic figures like Kempegowda and Sir M. Visvesvaraya. But the real reward is seeing how my art resonates with people and inspires them to look at nature differently.
For me, art is more than just painting — it’s about creating a dialogue between humans and nature. I hope my work encourages you to see the beauty in the smallest details and reminds you of the delicate balance that holds our world together.
Thank you for being part of my journey.
